I wasn’t originally planning to blog about this costume. I didn’t sew a single thing shown here. But I decided I would take this opportunity to write about a topic near and dear to my heart; thrift store cosplays.
Thrift stores can be a treasure trove of specific and interesting items, found nowhere else. The wide variety of random stuff that one can find there is astonishing. And of course, the prices are usually reasonable. (Although I’ve heard of stores in some bigger cities that are raising prices.) And also, thrift stores are sometimes affiliated with charities that are supported with the proceeds. Not to mention that it is much more sustainable and environmentally conscious to buy used. Overall, thrifting is my favorite way to shop, for cosplay or for daily wear clothes.
The one downside I’ve found to thrift store cosplays is the time investment required. Often, it’s a matter of stalking different thrift stores over a period of time to find a specific item needed. Each trip, I have a few things on my list that I hope to find. You have to be open to whatever is available that day, and not worry too much if you don’t have success immediately. Patience is important.
Now, let’s examine this costume in particular. The suit was a lucky find some years ago. David Tennant’s famous Gap suit was brown with blue stripes. Sadly, this suit lacks blue stripes. It’s obviously a woman’s suit (with lame women’s fake pockets), but it’s pretty similar otherwise. I think I paid $15 or so. Antonio Melani is the label on the tag. From my extensive 2 minute Google search, it is a top designer brand from Dillards. The materials and cut of the suit is first rate. The blue Worthington brand shirt was a more recent find. I think it was $8. The tie was only a few dollars. The Converse I’ve had for years. There is a Converse store at the local Outlet Mall and I found a couple pairs on sale. I had already been thinking about doing this costume at the time, and I bought both a cream and a red pair. Sadly, I didn’t remember that he wore cream and maroon pairs. Oh well. Red is close enough to maroon. The overcoat is another thrift store find. I believe my friend found it for me. It’s not exactly the same as Tennant’s, but it’s similar enough for me.Really, the only part I bought new were a new pair of glasses. I got them from Zenni Optical. There is someone who makes exact replicas of Tennant’s, but I didn’t feel like spending so much money. Again, these are similar enough for me. https://www.zennioptical.com/p/tr-rectangle-eyeglass-frames/2386?skuId=238625
My friend lent me his Sonic Screwdriver for a few pictures and Instagram reels. I am very much looking forward to wearing this cosplay to conventions in the future.
Yours in hard work, creativity, and a dash of Pixie Dust
