Dreams of an aesthetic closet

One day, I hope to have a spare room to use as a combination costume closet and sewing studio. It will be full of black and white storage solutions for all my costumes and accessories.  And it will be stunning. Right now, my costumes are stored in random garment bags from the thrift store on a double rack in my bedroom  and over-sized accessories are in clear tubs. It’s not very aesthetic. But at least I know where everything is. I had several vintage hats that needed safe storage. So I bought some papier mache hat boxes from Joanns, some mod podge, and some black and white wrapping paper. A few hours later, I had 3 beautiful hat boxes. It wasn’t difficult at all. Keeping the paper smooth and straight was tedious, and it definitely isn’t perfect. At some point, I will almost certainly buy another set of hat boxes and do the same with them. I have more hats that need homes. The black and white color scheme may or might not have been inspired by the photo on the pattern I used, ...

Getting back in the swing of things...

I’m so sorry I haven’t updated this blog in months. This was not my intention. But life happens. I was involved with a community theatre production (Stage managing and acting), attended a major comic convention, caught covid again, etc. I’ve also been working on my Children’s Party Entertainment business. ( https://favoritefablesententertainment.com/ if you are local to OKC, hit me up!) All that, plus regular life stuff, and it’s been quite the year already (Photo unrelated. Me on my 30th birthday in Walt Disney World.) I’m SO excited about some future projects. Expect some late Victorian shenanigans and some high fantasy. And, as always, Disney Princesses. I may have been bored one day and planned all my projects out to December 2023. Whoops. But I really can’t wait. It’ll be a fun ride. I just have to balance huge historical costume builds with more modest projects so I don’t burn out.  I will keep a weekly posting schedule from Labor Day to Memorial Day. This way, I’ll have the...

Unmentionables through the Decades - Project Announcement

Unmentionables. Smalls. Underthings. Lingerie. Underwear. Intimates. Whatever the name, everybody wears them (if you don't, I don't need to know). I love all the little frilly, girly bits of lace and soft cottons and smooth silks. So this year, I plan to make a set of underthings for every decade of the 20 th century. Each decade will have a dedicated blog with a pattern review and photos. I will also be posting on Instagram regularly. This will be a chance to improve my sewing skills, especially in working with lace and fine finishing work. I feel I have a solid grasp of the basics, and would love to make more heirloom quality pieces. Also, this project will lay the foundation for any 20 th century costumes I want to sew in the future. Half the work will already be done. Plus, it just makes me happy to sew pretty things. And that's enough reason. The only garment I plan to purchase will be my 1900 corset, and a 1910 corset, if possible. Thankfully for my budget,...

My New Years Plan

I thought some organization might be in order, so I made a little plan. I bought an 8x8 scrapbook at Hobby Lobby. Next came the hard part; I copied my patterns (I have way too many patterns) front and back. Next, I trimmed them to fit in the scrapbook. Also, any samples of the intended fabric for that project were included. Finally, I organized the copies in the order I want to sew them. Now, I have everything in one place for easy reference. When I'm shopping for fabric or notions, I'll have a list of all supplies needed from the back of the pattern envelope. I have two projects planned per month, but my New Years Resolution is to sew one project a month. I plan to post updates on Mondays, as the weekends are a prime time to sew.
