One day, I hope to have a spare room to use as a combination costume closet and sewing studio.
It will be full of black and white storage solutions for all my costumes and accessories. And it will be stunning. Right now, my costumes are stored in random garment bags from the thrift store on a double rack in my bedroom and over-sized accessories are in clear tubs. It’s not very aesthetic. But at least I know where everything is.
I had several vintage hats that needed safe storage. So I bought some papier mache hat boxes from Joanns, some mod podge, and some black and white wrapping paper. A few hours later, I had 3 beautiful hat boxes. It wasn’t difficult at all. Keeping the paper smooth and straight was tedious, and it definitely isn’t perfect. At some point, I will almost certainly buy another set of hat boxes and do the same with them. I have more hats that need homes. The black and white color scheme may or might not have been inspired by the photo on the pattern I used, Mccalls 5600. I believe the first project I made from this pattern was the long garment bag View A. I added a lining, but otherwise made it exactly as the pattern directs. I used a home decor weight fabric, but I don’t know where I bought it. I remember trying to pattern match the print across the zipper on the front, and I think I was fairly successful.I like how the accessories holder turned out. It’s View C on the same pattern. This one took quite some time, with all the tiny little pockets for jewelry. But it was worth it. The large inside pocket is accessed by a zipper down the middle. The purse organizer is View C on the same pattern. Again, I used a home decor weight fabric. I don’t remember any particular issues with this project. I also made a simple drawstring bag. Right now, it’s holding my Medieval accessories. Quick and simple, but a very useful project. I don’t remember the dimensions I used. The shorter garment bag, View B, was an unfinished object for years. I cut it out, and then just set it aside. This past summer, I decided to clear out some of my UFOs and found this. It didn’t take long to finish it. I couldn’t find my interfacing, so I used another layer of fabric instead. Waste not, want not.
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed a bit of organizational dreaming.
Yours in hard work, creativity, and a dash of Pixie DustSarah
