I am a HUGE Disney fan, but I sometimes
find Disney Channel Original Movies trite, boring, and overly
produced. I do enjoy the Descendants series, however. Evie, daughter
of the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, is a fun
character. She loves sewing and all things fashion. And also, she has
a mini Magic Mirror in her purse, and who wouldn't want one of those?
(I found it at the Disney store, so of course I had to cosplay her.)
For this look, I wasn't trying to exactly copy any one costume from
the films. More of an inspired look. I call it “What else would
Evie have in her closet?”.
I started with a purchased vest that
was originally cream-colored. It was painted Evie's signature blue
with regular acrylic paint from Hobby Lobby. I hand placed all 286
studs in the collar for a rock n' roll look. These studs were from
Hobby Lobby, also. That took approximately 20 million hours. I found
this awesome bejeweled applique on Etsy. For even more Villain Kid
interest, I painted these designs all over the vest. It was regular
black acrylic paint with fabric medium added to it.
This skirt, as the other main pieces,
started life as something else. I bought an extra-large gray wool
dress at a thrift store forever ago, and made it a skirt instead.
This
skirt is made from Simplicity 1322 view C. I just never wore it like
I thought I would. I dyed it blue on my stove top, and also stitched
on a non-functional zipper. Because, aesthetic.
The
black lace shirt and tights were already in my wardrobe, but never
worn. Waste not, want not. The crowned heart pendent and matching
chain was a lucky find on clearance at Joann Fabrics. It doesn't
match her necklace in the movies, but it definitely evokes her style.
And that was my goal.
My shoes were originally from my
sister. I simply never worn them. They were a neutral color, but a
very bold style (for my taste, anyway) and I just couldn't find a way
to style them. Then I had the idea to use them for Evie. I painted
them blue with a spray fabric paint, which I was very excited to
find. It worked a charm. I painted the heels black using a paper
towel for a different effect.
My friend happened to find and purchase the wig for me. It's based on her hairstyle in the first movie. A simple wash and brush was quickly accomplished. Then I redid the braids and it was ready to go.
There was no sewing to do, so this
project was unusual for me. But I had a lot of fun doing all the
painting and decorating. I already have a jacket waiting to be
transformed into a Mal costume, so I'm not done with the Descendants
world quite yet!
Yours
in hard work, creativity, and a dash of pixie dust,
Sarah
