Me, make another set of underthings from bedsheets? More likely than you might think. If you want cheap fabric, buy a sheet from a thrift store. My princess costume collection grows day by day. My latest addition is this set for my Cinderella cosplay.
I started with a pair of bloomers. My mom gave me a bag of trim and I found this pretty baby blue lace. I found a baby blue king-size sheet at the thrift store. It has a very slight sheen on the wrong side, which I used as the right side. That added nicely to the overall magical effect. The bloomers were made with Simplicity 3677, which I’ve used several times before. This is a very cute pirate costume pattern for ladies. The lace trim at the pants hem is just adorable. It’s so delicate and dainty, and perfect for Cinderella. As is my habit, I serged around each pattern piece to finish the edges before sewing it all together. There’s not much more to say about the bloomers. It was an easy project. If not for the lace, I would’ve been done from first cut to final seam in an hour.
I love the chemise, but I'm going to search for a new pattern for my next set. I'm just getting bored with it. I used McCalls 3474, a 1980s pattern I've used before a couple of times. Again, a quick and easy project. I added the lace at the neckline to match the bloomers. The back of the chemise has an elastic band at the top.
I knew I wanted an enormous skirt with multiple tiers. After making the two pieces mentioned above, I still had plenty of fabric left. I ripped strips of fabric 18 inches wide and as long as possible. Each strip was serged on all sides because I didn't want any chance of this coming apart on me. I spent too much time and energy on it. I sewed them all together and then measured the total length. I divided that by 3. 2/3rds was used for the bottom tier and 1/3rd for the middle tier. The top tier is about 9 inches tall and half as long as the middle tier. So in the end, each tier is twice as long as the tier above it. Can you believe I did all that, but I hate math?
I painstakingly hand-pleated all 3 tiers to each other. And that was a project all by itself, let me tell you. Around the huge hem, I machine-embroidered tiny spools of thread. It's my little nod to Cinderella's mice friends and their contributions. It literally took hours. But I love it so much. The petticoat is a showstopper, honestly.
The only problem is the weight. It is so super heavy. I really hope I don't have to take it apart and make it smaller. It's so heavy, I have to layer two hoop skirts together to support the weight.
Yours in hard work, creativity, and a dash of Pixie Dust
