Presenting my “Frozen Raspberry
Gauntlets of Power”. I don't name my projects every time, but it
just happened in this instance. For whatever reason, these fingerless
mitts decided that this is the name by which they shall be known. And
there was nothing I could do about it.
I have no idea where I got this yarn.
The color is difficult to describe. It is a beautiful
mauve/maroon/burgundy/purple. It has this secondary white yarn
twisted into it, giving it almost a halo effect. It reminded me of
frozen raspberries (hence the name). It is itchy, sadly, but not
unbearably so. Also, I knit it a bit too small for my hands. I
believe this was my first knitting project, so there were bound to be
issues. But overall, the tension is fairly even, tight, and neat. And
I adore the color so much. It's so fun and colorful, yet still
sophisticated. I just wish I had more, so I could have made a
matching hat or something.
It was incredibly simple to knit. A 2X
rib knit stitch all the way across (2 knit stitches, then 2 purl
stitches), and then a seam up the side, leaving an opening for the
thumbhole. I found it on freevintageknitting.com. It originally was
printed in a magazine in the 1940s, if I recall? There isn't that
much more to say about it. I absolutely adore it when I come upon
vintage or vintage style patterns that aren't complicated. That
combination is not always easy to find.
I love having something to do with my
hands in the evenings. Trust me, I can veg out on the couch just
watching TV with the best of them. But, I also like to sew by hand,
knit, or even fold clothes. (That last one I get from my mother. I
would rarely see her in front of the TV without a basket of clothes.
Well, she does have 7 children, and we were not always helpful with
chores as young kids.) And I think I inherited this from her mother
as well.. My grandmother loved to do beautiful cross-stitch pieces
when she was a bit younger. And now, she crochets all the time. Cute
little hot pads and dishrags and such. I am lucky enough to have been
the recipient of several of these pieces.
I think I will take this time to mourn
the loss of my favorite knit hat. It was one of those caps with ear
flaps and ties under the chin, that I knit of purple, super chunky
yarn. And sometime between winter 2017 and winter 2018, it
disappeared. I can't find it anywhere in my winter clothes tubs or
with my scarves, gloves, and hats. And of course, I don't have enough
of that yarn left to remake it, and I'm sure that it's no longer
produced. I guess I could find another yarn to make another, but I
loved that particular yarn so much. So pretty and so soft. And now
this has devolved into whining, so I guess I'm done with this blog.
Thanks for reading!
Yours in hard work, creativity, and a
dash of pixie dust,
Sarah
